Imagine, your car breaks down, and you have
the skills to fix it. You reach for the tool box and find what you
think are the appropriate set of tools. Great, there's just one
problem, you have an American car, and your tools are metric and
made for a foreign car. Now, you can either buy a new set of
tools, or have the car towed to a mechanic or dealer at great
expense.
Think, what having
the wrong tools is costing you?
Now, imagine you're a young Artist, and
landed that first big show at what you think is a prestigious
gallery. All of a sudden, the owner tells you that you are
responsible for the costs of hosting an opening, and that the
'split' is different from what was previously agreed upon, and they
want to lower the prices of your work. You can try to cancel the
show and remove your art from the gallery, and possibly wind up
with a bad reputation and ruined career . All of a sudden, what you
thought was a great career move and step up, turns into a disaster.
What would the
result have been if you did some research on the gallery? Perhaps
you could have located and then spoken with other artists who have
exhibited there in the recent past. Maybe, it would have behooved
you to spend a bit of money and have an attorney write a basic deal
memo, in advance. Rather than scaring the gallery owner, it could
have resulted in them seeing you in a different light, as a young
professional with a good sense of business.
You've just been promoted to the position of
Sales and Marketing Director. Wow, no more cold calls. but how is
your new team going to increase sales and keep existing clients
